musicaingiocoA program for adults and children .... Want to give your little Prince or Princess something to love? Take him or her to the theater and teach them how to love "great music". The project "Musicaingioco", designed by the Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana and now in its third edition, was created with the intent of introducing musical knowledge and favoring cultural, moral and social growth in pupils of kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools. The intentions are to introduce the children to an awareness about the values of life in a society characterized by continuous and frenetic changes and to introduce to young listeners the possibility of strengthening critical spirit, personality and self-esteem while developing social values other than those offered by modern society. The project has enabled children to easily access enjoyable cultural content and has contributed to the development of skills such as reasoning, understanding feelings and emotions, communication and knowledge of musical harmony through the chosen theme of the fairy tale. "Musicaingioco" was also meant to increase opportunities for musical events, aimed at adults and children while promoting "great" music to very young listeners, which today are poorly motivated to get to know classical music for lack of specifically devoted programs. This approach has been highly successful and has shown how, working with dedication and enthusiasm, one can reach important professional and high artistic levels through valid team work.

The project has brought many budding artists, together with young viewers, to musical theater for the first time, each consciously engaged in an important experience meant to further the cultural message addressed to children, as well as to respective artistic growth. The idea of "Musicaingioco" came to be during a meeting between the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, the State Conservatory of Music "V. Bellini" and the Art Academy of Palermo, all of whom joined forces to create musical performances, designed and implemented by a team composed of their students, together with a small group of dancers and with the children's choirs of the Foundation and of the city's schools. The young cast and producers have been able to live a unique experience which has catapulted them from their classrooms onto the stage of the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi where, they have freed their imagination in the creation of the shows guided by a team of professionals such as Valentina Console and Fabrizio Lupo (instructors at the Art Academy), Enzo Caruso (dance choreographer), Giovanni Mazzara (Professor of the Conservatory and Stage Director), Fabio Ciulla (Professor of the Conservatory and the Foundation's Master of the children's chorus ) and Francesco Di Mauro (author of the artistic project and Conductor of the orchestra). Over the past two years, the theatre of Palermo has become, (and will again this year), an active Musical Theatre Laboratory where students from the Academy invent and create the stage scenery, video projections and graphics (including cartoons) for the productions and programs, Conservatory students play side by side with the Orchestra members of the Foundation in the preparation and execution of the musical programs and the young dancers and choirs, made up of children between ages eight and thirteen, study and stage performances.

The project also has the objective of creating opportunities for performing by young participants, through use of their creative, artistic, relational, communicative and organizational skills, and to promote actions which enhance diversity for each activity in which they participate. In this way, the young performers have the opportunity to express their unique potential while reinforcing personal talents, and perhaps, taking those first steps to becoming valid performers of the future. As a corollary of this important formative experience, we like to highlight the final meeting between the young performers and the young viewers who, as in previous years, share a joyful and pleasant theatrical experience where everyone has fun and shares the magic that music, singing and dancing are able to give. In conclusion, the project "Musicaingioco" has become for the city of Palermo, an important opportunity that matters for the musical education of our youngsters. The artistic heritage, that over the last forty years has gradually been reduced even nationally, has also seen the reduction in youth audiences due to a massive range of alternative entertainment, and for lack of appropriate training tools to motivate learning about classical music. The final objective of the project is to create the conditions for the enjoyment of classical music by everyone, including the use of new generations of tools and technology for musical appreciation, thus, encouraging youth cultural growth with the development of artistic sensitivity and creative potential. The kids of today, who will be part of the audience of tomorrow, can master the world of music through the knowledge of its basic elements that are an inherent part of an important cultural institution such as the Fondation Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana. In this way, the Foundation fulfills its tasks of making classical music accessible and preserving and promoting culture, primary objectives of its core activities. Priorities that should also take into account the important function that music has in society, an inheritance which should be handed down to posterity in order to feed the quest for knowledge and enhance the skills and talents of a new generation. Music for young people by young people: a winning combination for a project that has fully achieved the objective of producing high-quality musical productions and demonstrated the undoubted value in cultural, educational and promotional terms, while promoting youth artistic forces and capturing the interest of audiences of little viewers otherwise without knowledge.

During the 2012/2013 Season, "Musicaingioco" will continue to entertain children with the following programs:

The fairy tale of Cinderella is one of the most beloved tales in the entire world. The premiere of this ballet was held at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1945, a memorable year for the Soviet Union. The music composed by Prokofiev, reflected in fact the suffering caused by the war and the brilliant light of hope for the future. Music by Leo Delibes

COPPELIA

In the atmosphere of a fairy tale, the celebrated ballet "Coppelia" by Leo Delibes tells the story of three characters: Coppelius, an eccentric builder of mechanical toys, the beautiful Swanilda and her enterprising betrothed Franz with their activities revolving around a mysterious female figure intent on reading a book on the balcony of Coppelius' workshop. She is Coppelia, the believed-to-be daughter of Coppelius, who is in reality an enchanting mechanical doll, that her creator, Coppelius would like to bring to life through magic. Through disguise (Swanilda takes the place of Coppelia to deceive Coppelius and win back Franz) and misleading magic (Coppelius believes that his doll has become a flesh and blood person), the engaged couple will realize their dream of love.
